101 Reasons To Go Vegan

PEOPLE

Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation. 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater. Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world. If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain). If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India). Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases. In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday. The UK imports 46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock. Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation. 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink.
LAND
If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left. 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes. 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares). It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef. Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming. Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion, 6 billion tons/year in the USA. If everyone went vegetarian up to 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960. Between 1966-1983, 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing. 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing. Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed. An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming. Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming.
AIR

The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply. The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming). Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year. Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher). Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect. Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer. Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere. CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production. Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air.

WATER
25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat. UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers. Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers. In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs. of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs. Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers. Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total. The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year. Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going. The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship. The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow.
EFFICIENCY
To produce 1 calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient). Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced. Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc. 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce. A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!) If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least). The EC spends 100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000. Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals 70% of all grain is fed to animals. Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford.
ANIMALS
Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed. Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch. Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation. Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally). Chickens are crammed into battery cages with up to 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up. Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds. Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic. Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs. Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around. Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores. Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth. Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones. Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse. Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old. Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets. Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates. Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall. In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher). Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers). Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out. Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species.
HEALTH

Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often). Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten. Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms. The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet. Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies. Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths). Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases. Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure. Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes. Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E. Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs. Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema. Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating. Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians. The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy).

Salma Hayek Breastfeeds!

The TRUE purpose of breasts. They are nourishing, lifegiving gifts of ABUNDANCE for our children and others...if need be. How grateful I am for my sisters and friends who nursed my dear little Millie at a time we ABSOLUTELY needed it! UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!!

Rebirthing Transformation

Here is my Sentient Family. These are the BEAUTIFUL, AMAZING, GIFTED, and INSPIRING people that I was blessed with the opportunity to spend 10 days with. I'm not going to go into detail about my experience here. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you watch this LINK to the video that was put together summing up our experiences. I LOVE IT! My dear friend ECO has touched my heart with it! Tears are brought to my eyes as I remember the experience and what I learned and what growth took place for me. TRULY LIFE CHANGING!! For those of you wanting to know more about the change I received, please feel free to call. I will do my best to try and use words to express my feelings but I am finding it is quite hard. Especially when you add my recent car accident to the whole mix. WHOA! As I said before...what a ride over this last month. Moving out of a space of SO MANY habitual patterns that are NO longer serving me! Seeing them SO CLEARLY and just moving through them with SIMPLICITY and SERENITY!
Below are more pictures of me. I am planning on practicing and putting into full force the processes I learned. Right now, I am asking for those interested in being practiced on to contact me asap. I will work with any willing person for no donation. Because I have been working in this field for awhile, I do feel pretty confident about the processes but would still like to tap in a bit more and feel more at ease and comfortable with it before I take it to the level I desire. So just call or email me and we can set a time to go to work together. I think these processes can and do work for ANYONE and are so GENTLE yet POWERFUL at getting people to the place they need to move the trauma energy quickly and effectively.
Lastly, I would state here that if any of you find yourself seeking a change that is lasting....please don't pass up the chance to go to one of Elena's BIB workshop. My husband is planning on going to her one in Oregon in May. I can promise that the person who enters that space and the person who leaves it will be to COMPLETELY different people. As stated in the video, you can see the light that has entered the eyes of EVERY single person there.
Abundant Peace to All,
Rachel
P.S. Yes...I do have yarn in my hair. I LOVED IT and was VERY sad when we took it out. I could not properly take care of it without use of both my hands. It was part of my physical transformation to go along with my spiritual one.
P.P.S. Our cameras were broken in the car so these pictures are one that were posted by other people. We were VERY sad but still grateful that we have others photos! Thank you!
Here is my LOVELY friend Matthew, holding Mabel as you see on some of the other babies on Elena's site. Her teacher, Igor, taught that it incorporates all the muscles of the body and is VERY stregthening.

Yet Another Miracle/Car Accident

My family, loved ones and friends are wondering if I am as a cat with 9 lives. This will be the 4th time in the last 8 years I have side stepped death. On our drive home from our AMAZINGLY, LOVELY workshop (which I will type about at a later date when typing isn't so difficult), about 80 miles east of Elko, we rolled our car, at least twice, and ended up wheels down on the opposite of the freeway. An ambulance came about 10 minutes later and drove us to Battle Mountain Hospital. Battle Mountain being named "the armpit of the nation" in an article my husband read after our accident.
We hit black ice that none of us saw or even felt at any other time on our drive except when the initial onset of the accident started as we floated across the freeway and couldn't figure out why. I began to try to gain control but then we proceeded to fish tail. When I realized I wasn't gaining control, I pressed on the brake that sent us into a spiral of rolling which we guesstimate was at least twice if not 3 or 4 times.
The people in the car were myself, my sister in law Yulia, my dear friend and babysitter Charlene, and her daughter Katrina and Mabel....my sweet little one. We were all wearing our seat belts but Katrina who was sitting in the middle seat. Everyone but myself suffered pretty severe cuts filled with glass and gravel. Luckily, Katrina being the only one needing stitches. 17 in total.
From my memory, it was the first or maybe second roll where I felt the crack in my shoulder. The seat belt did, in fact, save my life (what a blessing) but in the process broke my collar bone. Clean in half. Almost a compound fractor, according to my husband. You can see quite a bit of my clavicle trying to stretch through the skin...for a while, on the verge of maybe escaping through. But luckily, that has not happened yet and believe it not to be the case in the future at this point.
Mabel was ABSOLUTELY unscathed. Not a mark on her. She had been sleeping in her car seat when the accident began. As she begun to cry as the car stopped, she cried not a cry of pain or even fear but a cry of "I'm awake." It was the MOST beautiful sound to all of our ears. Upon examination, she was left completely intact. Not a scratch. She was in her car seat, in the very back of the car with all of our loose items....boxes full of fruit, backpacks, etc. As debris flew in and outside of the car, not one item hit her and fell on her in anyway. MIRACLE!! I am still singing praises to all our healing angels and ancestors that helped to prevent any damage to my little one. THANK YOU AGAIN!!
I am healing quite well, I believe. We had a surgeon, very lightly, recommend surgery but, for those of you who know me, I am doing my best to see if I can heal it myself. Lots and LOTS of raw foods, herbs, energy work, emotional processing, etc. We will be going back for another x-ray though in the next few days to see what progress we are making so....I will keep you posted.
Physically, I am no longer in absolute pain all the time. That did subside within the first 24 to 48 hours. Especially after I fasted a bit and started on a regime of BF&C. We are a week and a half out now and it still aches pretty much all the time but I have learned how to emotionally and physically deal with the discomfort. At our workshop, Elena taught us to spiral with the pain in labor to help move the energy. I decided to try this and have found it to be PHENOMENALLY helpful. Just like labor, I am learning that any pain or discomfort can be moved into a space of deep teaching and understanding and, has been taught for woman in labor, can be turned into pleasure or even orgasm. I know it is just such a "far out there" thing to say but I'll tell you I have found it to be true as I deal with this pain.
I won't go into detail now but believe me....the last month of my life has been the MOST learning and growth I think I have had in my ENTIRE life!! The workshop was TRANSFORMATIVE for all of us involved and the car accident was really just the icing on the cake. Please know....I am still in a space of really striving to understand and work through the car accident but I do see the light at the end of the tunnel. I recognize and have been inspired to take this opportunity and growth and run with it! I am doing my best to do just that.
I have gone into the abyss of myself and emotional pain that resides there, only to have that pain send me into the ecstasy of loving life to it's fullest and realizing this is wisdom I could not learn any other way. The last couple of days have been a bit hard, once again, but am grateful for the understanding that has already taken place so I can hold out faith it will get better because of past experience.
I must say a very LOVING and HEARTFELT thank you...to all of you who have gone the extra mile with your thoughts and prayers you have sent my way. Also, those dear friends who have taken the time to make me so DELICIOUS raw foods. I am unable to make anything myself, even nurse my own baby without some holding her to my breast so...these small thoughtful acts have made a HUGE difference on this path to healing. My goodness, I love you all my dear BROTHER and SISTERS!
I will post again soon when I can. I am still in a very powerful place of healing and just have so much coming up for me every minute of everyday. Just trying to take it all in and accept my current situation to the best of my ability.
Abundant peace to all of you,
Rachel
P.S. Notice from the pictures that all the windows have been broken out of the car but mine. Guaranteed without our seat belts on, Yulia and I would have been thrown from the car and suffered a fate I can only imagine. Thank you car manufactures! I thought I would NEVER be thanking them for that!!

High-Fat Prenatal Diet Leads to Early Puberty and Obesity in Offspring by David Gutierrez, staff writer (NaturalNews)

Children whose mothers ate a high-fat diet while pregnant with them and while breastfeeding are more likely to hit puberty early and to become obese as adults, according to a study conducted by researchers from the Liggins Institute of the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and presented at the 90th annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, in San Francisco.
Researchers fed female rats either a normal or a high-fat diet throughout pregnancy and lactation. The weaned offspring of these rats were then fed either a high-fat or a normal diet themselves.Rats whose mothers had been fed a high-fat diet reached puberty faster than rats whose mothers had consumed a healthier diet, regardless of what the rats themselves were eating.Early onset of puberty is associated with a greater risk of obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes, teenage depression, and adult breast cancer.
Among the rats whose mothers had been fed a normal diet, those who ate a high-fat diet reached puberty sooner than those eating a healthy diet. But the diet of rats whose mothers had eaten too much fat seemed to have no influence on when they reached puberty."A high-fat diet after birth did not make the early-onset puberty any earlier," lead author Deborah Sloboda said. "This might suggest that the fetal environment in high-fat fed mothers plays a greater role in determining pubertal onset than childhood nutrition."The researchers observed the rats into adulthood, noting that those whose mothers had eaten a high-fat diet tended to have a higher percentage of body fat than those whose mothers had been in the control group. This effect was also independent of the rats' own diet. These rats also had abnormal levels of sex hormones."Maternal high-fat nutrition may influence reproductive maturation and reproductive capacity in adult offspring," Sloboda said.

Early C-Section Risks Endanger Newborn Babies by Elizabeth Walling

(NaturalNews) A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that having an elective repeat c-section before 39 weeks of pregnancy puts a newborn at risk for serious illnesses and even death. Just about 40 percent of all cesarean sections are repeat procedures, so this study is quite relevant to any woman considering an early elective c-section.
As of 2006, c-sections accounted for more than 30 percent of all births in the United States, up from 20 percent in 1996 and 5 percent in 1970. C-section rates continue to climb, but this procedure is not always to the benefit of the newborn involved. Of course there are many c-sections performed for medical reasons, even to save the life of an infant or mother, but many are elective, meaning there is little medical reason behind the caesarean.
Some of these elective c-sections are done as early as 34 weeks, although the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends elective c-sections be performed no earlier than 39 weeks. The study looked at records of more than 13,000 women who had elective repeat c-sections at any one of 19 clinical centers belonging to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network.
The women had an elective repeat c-section between 37 and 39 weeks of pregnancy without any prior indication of an early c-section.The study then examined whether these women had babies who later died or suffered from serious medical conditions such as respiratory distress, infections or seizures. It was also noted if babies were hospitalized longer than usual, if they were admitted into neonatal intensive care, or if they required respiration at any point during the initial stay at the hospital. Results were conclusive that babies delivered before 39 weeks were much more likely to suffer from health problems.
For infants delivered at 37 weeks, the risk doubled compared to delivery at 39 weeks. These results confirm that babies should not be delivered before 39 weeks simply for the sake of convenience, says Dr. Alan T. N. Tita, assistant professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. He also states this evidence is important for counseling mothers to wait to have an elective c-section until after the 39-week mark.
Obviously, if there are medical reasons behind the procedure the risks involved are outweighed by the benefits. But if there is no strong medical reason to perform a c-section, mother and baby are much better off waiting until after 39 weeks.Paddock, Catharine. Early Repeat C-Section Riskier to Baby. High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated with Toxic Mercury

High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated with Toxic Mercury,
Says Research by Mike Adams, NaturalNews Editor (NaturalNews)
New research published in Environmental Health and conducted in part by a scientist at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy has revealed that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is contaminated with the toxic heavy metal mercury. That means that many of the products using HFCS may also be contaminated with mercury.
Carbonated sodas are sweetened with HFCS, as are candy bars, bread, salad dressings, pizza sauce, fruit drinks and thousands of other grocery items.Mercury is so highly toxic that it causes severe neurological disorders. It can also result in the loss of hair, teeth and nails as well as muscle weakness, loss of kidney function, emotional mood swings and memory impairment. (http://en.wikipedia .org/wiki/ Mercur...) (P.S. Somebody please update this Wikipedia page with this latest research about HFCS being a source for mercury exposure, too.)The highest level of contamination found in the study (http://www.ehjourna l.net/content/ 8/1/2) was 0.57 micrograms of mercury per gram of HFCS.
The EPA says that an average-sized woman should consume no more than 5.5 micrograms per day of mercury, meaning that the average American consumer may be eating five times the upper safety limit of mercury every day due to high-fructose corn syrup consumption if they consume the foods tested in the study. That's because the average American consumes 12 teaspoons of HFCS every day! So just by eating the standard American diet of processed foods, consumers are right now potentially exposing themselves to exceedingly high levels of mercury that far surpass the safety limits set by the EPA.
Buy groceries, get free mercury!
High-fructose corn syrup is used in almost everything, it seems. A second study conducted by David Wallinga, M.D., entitled "Not So Sweet: Missing Mercury and High Fructose Corn Syrup" (http://healthobserv atory.org/ librar...) reveals that nearly one-third of all grocery items sweetened with HFCS were contaminated with mercury.Eating some sweetened yogurt? Mercury! How about some salad dressing with HFCS? Mercury!Want some ketchup on that burger? Mercury!
In fact, mercury is found in thousands of grocery products sold across the world right now. And it's no exaggeration to say that mainstream consumers of popular food items are likely suffering from widespread mercury poisoning (especially if you add in the mercury exposure they're getting from dental fillings).
Politics at the FDA
There's an angle on this story that nobody is yet reporting. The lead author of this study, Renee Dufault, used to work for the FDA. In fact, she investigated the use of mercury at chlorine plants, where the manufacturing process results in the chlorine being contaminated with mercury. With chlorine being dumped into the public water supply, this is obviously a health concern.Renee Dufault retired from the FDA last year.
Only now, nearly a year after her retirement, has she dared to release her findings about mercury and high-fructose corn syrup. Can you guess why? As an employee of the FDA, there's little question she would have been pressured into silence about the HFCS mercury contamination issue. A lot of powerful corporations that wield steady influence over the FDA would not be happy to see the truth come out about HFCS and mercury. So she waited until after retiring from the FDA to go public with these findings. In fact, Reuters is now reporting that Dufault told the FDA about her findings, but the agency did nothing to act on them. Is anybody really surprised?
Did the CRA know about the mercury contamination of HFCS?But let's give the CRA the benefit of the doubt for a minute here. Let's suppose that right up to 2005, HFCS was routinely contaminated with mercury, but now suddenly it's all mercury free.Doesn't anybody wonder why didn't the CRA recall the mercury-contaminate d HFCS when it became aware of the issue? If all HFCS is now manufactured in a mercury-free process (which is highly doubtful, by the way), then that means at some point the CRA must have realized HFCS was contaminated with mercury and it made a decision to switch to a mercury-free process.
Why was the public never warned about the pre-2006 mercury in HFCS? And why weren't foods containing HFCS recalled from store shelves due to their mercury content? If the CRA's present-day statements are to be believed, it means the group must have been aware of the mercury contamination of HFCS through 2005 and yet it did nothing to make that fact known to the public. So even if HFCS is free from mercury today, the CRA has a lot of explaining to do. The group either knew about the mercury contamination and did nothing to warn the public, or it didn't know about the mercury contamination, putting it in a position of remarkable ignorance about the safety of a product it has routinely claimed to be "safe" and "natural" for many years. So which is it? Is the CRA run by liars, or just fools? My offer for a phone interview with a CRA representative remains open.
If anybody from the CRA wants to get on the phone with me and defend HFCS, the door is wide open. You know how to reach me.Disclaimer: This article is an opinion piece. All statements are my own opinion and are obviously not agreed to by the CRA, which vigorously defends the safety of HFCS. Almost as if their jobs depended on it, come to think....Sources for this story:

Chemicals Cause Infertility

Non-Stick Cookware Chemicals Cause 150 Percent Increase in Infertility
By Mike Adams, January 29, 2009
Is eating off non-stick cookware a new form of chemical birth control? New research published in the journal Human Reproduction reveals that women with the highest levels of Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) in their blood are 150% more likely to have difficulty conceiving a child.
PFCs are commonly used in non-stick cookware, and eating off non-stick cookware inevitably results in the consumption of these chemicals. Even so-called "diamond" non-stick surfaces are easily scratched.
A previous report by NaturalNews exposed the truth about so-called "diamond" non-stick cookware surfaces. See: http://www.naturaln ews.com/021059. html PFCs are also known to impair fetal growth, harm the liver and suppress immune system function. They're also highly toxic to the environment, both during the manufacture and disposal of non-stick cookware products. So why do the chemicals remain legal in the U.S. and other countries? Because they're made by powerful corporations like DuPont (the owner of the Teflon trademark).
Those corporations hold great sway over U.S. regulators, and they routinely distort the truth to hide the dangers of their chemicals.DuPont, for example, illegally withheld information about the health risks of its chemicals from the EPA, says a Bloomberg article from 2004 (http://www.ewg. org/node/ 16471). It's almost routine these days for corporations to lie about the dangers of the chemicals they produce. To this day, DuPont insists PFOA and Teflon are perfectly safe to cook on.

Transformation Aids Each Other

My dear friend, DeLynn, sent this to me today. I loved it enough to share it with all of you! It gave me hope that all the emotional/spiritual work I have been doing so rigourously is also adding in changing my children and those I love. Thanks DeLynn. Something I already believed but DEFINITELY needed a reminder. Abundant peace, Rachel
After the dust has settled from the holiday dinners and family occasions, I thought it an appropriate time to offer a kabbalistic understanding of the nature of family.
Each of us comes into this world with a specific set of spiritual goals that must be achieved over the course of our lifetimes. These changes take place within the individual, but are not limited to the individual. Kabbalistically, children not only inherit our DNA, they also inherit a portion of our consciousness. In fact, DNA, molecules and atoms are all really different levels of consciousness.
Thus, each time a parent changes, changes are also taking place in their children. Likewise, when children embrace spirituality, beginning at the age of twelve and thirteen, any transformation they undergo will also influence their parents. A spiritual umbilical cord forever links parents, children and siblings.
When one boat rises, everyone experiences a bit of that new elevation; when one falls, everyone in the family sinks a little bit. The purpose of a family is to create an opportunity for constant interactions that allow us to discover those places within us where self-centered desire governs our behavior.
Family members have the annoying talent of triggering reactions within us, thereby giving us an opportunity not to react. Each time we forgo a selfish desire and choose selfless behavior - each time we choose our response instead of reacting - we make a change in our lives. And with each change, we receive a little more Light.
As we've seen, our efforts benefit our families as well, giving them additional strength to identify and transform their own selfishness. And as a family experiences the power of spiritual transformation and connects to the world of Light, those benefits extend to its friends, neighbors, and community.
As people throughout the world succeed in moving away from the dictates of the ego and toward selflessness, the entire planet is transformed into a paradise.
For the beginning of this new year, let us all realize that one great way to bring about peace on earth (and in our minds) is to be conscious and proactive at home. The more compassion and tolerance and self-awareness we show our family, the more we will see that reflected in the world at large.
Happy New Year to Everybody!
All the best,
Yehuda

Repeat C~Sections Increase Risks

So aside from the fact that C-sections are ever increasing at more phenomenal rates than ever before....along side it is the issue of performing a c-section too early. I find it COMPLETE craziness that the medical field has chosen to deem 37 weeks as full term. We are we LUMPING woman into this little box as all being the same, all the time. If it were truly the case that 37 weeks was full term, then all babies born at 37 weeks would be healthy. Right?
I could go on but I have bolded parts of the article that stood out the most to me. You decide for yourself what you think. I know what I think about it. ILLOGICAL!
Abundant peace to all,
Rachel

The common practice of scheduling a Caesarean section a little early to make childbirth more convenient sharply increases the risk that babies will be born with potentially serious complications, according to the first large-scale study to examine the dangers.
The study of more than 24,000 full-term infants found that those delivered at 37 weeks to mothers who had elective repeat C-sections were about twice as likely as newborns delivered at the recommended 39 weeks to experience breathing problems, bloodstream infections and other complications. Babies born at 38 weeks were 50 percent more likely to have problems; the risk was about 20 percent higher just a few days early.
"Having a baby at term, you might expect the baby would do well and come to your room with you and then go right home with you," said Catherine Y. Spong of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which sponsored the study in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. "This shows there are significant risks."
The findings come as health authorities have become increasingly alarmed about the rate of Caesarean births, which has been rising steadily and is now at an all time-high, according to another federal report released yesterday. More than a third of U.S.-born babies are delivered by C-section, which involves removing the baby through a surgical incision in the abdomen instead of vaginally through labor.
The reason for the increase has been the subject of intense debate. In part it is the result of more women having children later in life, when complications are more common. In part it is because doctors are identifying more problem pregnancies early and intervening to protect the mother or the baby. And once a woman has had a C-section, she is much more likely to deliver subsequent children the same way.
Although a pregnancy is considered full term after 37 weeks, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that elective repeat C-sections occur no earlier than 39 weeks to make sure the baby has fully developed. But some women opt to deliver a little earlier for a variety of reasons, including being eager to see their baby, being tired of pregnancy or for convenience.
"Sometimes a patient is bonded to their physician and that physician may be going out of town and the patient wants that physician to perform the delivery and says, 'Can we schedule it when you're in town?' " Spong said. "Sometimes her in-laws are coming at a certain time and she may want to deliver then."
Although previous studies have suggested increased risks in C-sections before 39 weeks, the new study is the first large-scale attempt to confirm and quantify those risks.
"I think that as a patient or a physician, you might be convinced that being close to 39 weeks is probably good enough and there's probably no difference if you are going to turn 39 weeks on a Sunday to have a Caesarean on, say, a Friday," Spong said. "Before this, we didn't have the data to say that there would be more risk."
For the study, Alan T.N. Tita of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his colleagues analyzed data collected by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, which gathers data on pregnancies at 19 medical centers nationwide.
Of 24,077 women who gave birth through a repeat C-section between 1999 and 2002, 13,258 were clearly elective -- meaning the researchers could find no evidence that the baby or mother was in distress or any other medical reason the woman could not attempt to deliver through labor. Of those, nearly 36 percent of the deliveries occurred before 39 weeks.
"To have more than a third of them done before 39 weeks is surprising," Spong said. "These are all elective repeat Caesareans without a medical indication and without labor."
Because the study was conducted at academic medical centers that are most likely to follow official recommendations, the actual rate may even be higher, Tita said.
More than 15 percent of the babies delivered at 37 weeks suffered a complication, such as problems breathing, low blood sugar, infections or conditions that required intensive care, compared with about 8 percent of those delivered at 39 weeks. About 11 percent of those delivered at 38 weeks experienced complications. Babies born at 37 weeks were four times as likely as those delivered at 39 weeks to have breathing problems.
Although most babies with these complications recover quickly, they can need testing and treatment, including intensive care, that require them to remain in the hospital for at least several days. In some cases, the complications can be dangerous.
"Respiratory distress requiring a ventilator can be life-threatening," Spong said. "So although most do well, there is the possibility of serious adverse outcomes."
At the very least, such complications are stressful for parents and their babies.
"There are economic implications and emotional and impact on the families," Spong said. "Breast-feeding is more difficult, and bonding is more difficult."
While other experts agreed that the study provides important information to help women and their doctors make decisions about timing C-sections, some said the risks of complications are relatively low and need to be weighed against the small but not insignificant chance that waiting a week or two would result in more stillbirths.
"This paper, although it provides important information about risk, does not give us the whole story," said Michael F. Greene of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, who wrote an editorial accompanying the study. "It doesn't provide an accounting of how many babies may have died waiting to get to 39 weeks. You have to balance both sides of the ledger."
But Spong said the magnitude of the risk of stillbirth from waiting is unclear, and the new study shows the risks of complications from early delivery is significant.
"It's hard to advocate doing a Caesarean at 37 weeks to try to prevent a stillbirth when we don't really know the true risk," she said.

EVERY Week COUNTS!

This is just to go along with the post below. Some more stastical information which is always a good thing, I think~ Rachel
This time of year, some hospitals see a small uptick in baby deliveries thanks to families eager to fit the blessed event in around holiday plans or in time to claim a tax deduction. Conventional wisdom has long held that inducing labor or having a Caesarean section a bit early posed little risk, since after 34 weeks gestation, all the baby has to do was grow.
But new research shows that those last weeks of pregnancy are more important than once thought for brain, lung and liver development. And there may be lasting consequences for babies born at 34 to 36 weeks, now called "late preterm."

New research shows that the last weeks of pregnancy are more important than once thought for brain, lung and liver development. A study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in October calculated that for each week a baby stayed in the womb between 32 and 39 weeks, there is a 23% decrease in problems such as respiratory distress, jaundice, seizures, temperature instability and brain hemorrhages.

A study of nearly 15,000 children in the Journal of Pediatrics in July found that those born between 32 and 36 weeks had lower reading and math scores in first grade than babies who went to full term. New research also suggests that late preterm infants are at higher risk for mild cognitive and behavioral problems and may have lower I.Q.s than those who go full term.
What's more, experts warn that a fetus's estimated age may be off by as much as two weeks either way, meaning that a baby thought to be 36 weeks along might be only 34.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the March of Dimes are now urging obstetricians not to deliver babies before 39 weeks unless there is a medical reason to do so. "It's very important for people to realize that every week counts," says Lucky E. Jain, a professor of pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine.

It's unclear how many deliveries are performed early for nonmedical reasons. Preterm births (before 37 weeks) have risen 31% in the U.S. since 1981 -- to one in every eight births. The most serious problems are seen in the tiniest babies. But nearly 75% of preterm babies are born between 34 and 36 weeks, and much of the increase has come in C-sections, which now account for a third of all U.S. births. An additional one-fifth of all births are via induced labor, up 125% since 1989.
Many of those elective deliveries are done for medical reasons such as fetal distress or pre-eclampsia, a sudden spike in the mother's blood pressure. Those that aren't can be hard to distinguish. "Obstetricians know the rules and they are very creative about some of their indications -- like 'impending pre-eclampsia,'" says Alan Fleischman, medical director for the March of Dimes.
Why do doctors agree to deliver a baby early when there's no medical reason? Some cite pressure from parents. "'I'm tired of being pregnant. My fingers are swollen. My mother-in-law is coming' -- we hear that all the time," says Laura E. Riley, medical director of labor and delivery at Massachusetts General Hospital. "But there are 25 other patients waiting, and saying 'no' can take 45 minutes, so sometimes we cave."
There's also a perception that delivering early by c-section is safer for the baby, even though it means major surgery for the mom. "The idea is that somehow, if you're in complete control of the delivery, then only good things will happen. But that's categorically wrong. The baby and the uterus know best," says F. Sessions Cole, director of newborn medicine at St. Louis Children's Hospital.
He explains that a complex series of events occurs in late pregnancy to prepare the baby to survive outside the womb: The fetus acquires fat needed to maintain body temperature; the liver matures enough to eliminate a toxin called bilirubin from the body; and the lungs get ready to exchange oxygen as soon as the umbilical cord is clamped. Disrupting any of those steps can result in brain damage and other problems. In addition, the squeezing of the uterus during labor stimulates the baby and the placenta to make steroid hormones that help this last phase of lung maturation -- and that's missed if the mother never goes into labor.

"We don't have a magic ball to predict which babies might have problems," says Dr. Cole. "But we can say that the more before 39 weeks a baby is delivered, the more likely that one or more complications will occur."

In cases where there are medical reasons to deliver a baby early, lung maturation can be determined with amniocentesis -- using a long needle to withdraw fluid from inside the uterus. But that can cause infection, bleeding or a leak or fetal distress, which could require an emergency c-section.
Trying to determine maturity by the size of the fetus can also be problematic. Babies of mothers with gestational diabetes are often very large for their age, but even less developed for their age than normal-size babies. Growing beyond 42 weeks can also pose problems, since the placenta deteriorates and can't sustain the growing baby.
Making families aware of the risks of delivering early makes a big difference. In Utah, where 27% of elective deliveries in 1999 took place before the 39th week, a major awareness campaign has reduced that to less than 5%. At two St. Louis hospitals that send premature babies to Dr. Cole's neonatal intensive-care unit, obstetricians now ask couples who want to schedule a delivery before 39 weeks to sign a consent form acknowledging the risks. At that point, many wait for nature to take its course, says Dr. Cole.
